James Wood Poplar Grove Collection

| Collection Description: | Papers found in at Poplar Grove/Brampton Plantation in Queen Anne's County, deposited at the Maryland State Archives for appraisal and processing. The Poplar Grove Collection encompasses family history beginning from land grants in the 17th century through to business papers in the early 20th century. Nineteenth-century documents form a significant focus of this collection, with records pertaining to enslaved laborers before the Civil War, and detailed records of farm management and business ventures, such as the development of the Eastern Shore Railroad. Correspondence relates to William Hemsley Emory, Thomas Emory, John Register Emory, John Tilghman, and family members who were significant in the governance and economy of Queen Anne's County on the Eastern Shore and of Maryland. Deeds and records also The correspondence of Ann Marie Hemsley Emory and Alice Emory Wilmer also form large series in the collection. Some examples of the documents found at Poplar Grove include a broadside directed against the re-election of President Martin Van Buren. Item inventories and images of the contents of the records transferred from Poplar Grove to the Maryland State Archives will be available as ebooks from this location. An example of one of the Ebooks is images of Letters to A. M. H. Emory, which form the first series of this collection. The collection also contains papers and research relating to Poplar Grove Farm, donated by Mrs. Mary Wood.
